Summary Harry is a hero, leader, loyal friend and lover. Harry is also exceedingly jealous, which has consequences for everyone.
Concrit is welcomed and appreciated.
"Harry! Come on before they find the entrance," Hermione shouted.
Debris rained down on Harry where he stood, undecided, signalling the collapse of more timbers and masonry from the burning building above him. He coughed violently in the swirling dust and attempted to clean his glasses, wiping them on his filthy jumper in a vain effort to improve his visibility.
Through the ever-thickening smoke he could just about make out Hermione and Remus ahead of him, inching their way forward down the semi collapsed passageway with only the faintest Lumos to guide them.
"I was just looking to see if…"
"There is no one else, Harry," said Remus. "We did what we could, but they're all dead. Of that, I'm certain." Remus' outline grew more distinct in the gloom, and Harry realised he was walking back toward him.
"Remus, what are you doing?" Hermione's voice rose above the din.
He ignored her and reached out to touch Harry’s shoulder. "We'll be dead too, Harry, if we don't get to the Apparition point before they find us. And I for one don't want to end my days caught like a rat in this bloody tunnel." He gave Harry's shoulder a quick squeeze of reassurance and began to turn away.
Harry caught his arm, stilling him. "I was…" He let go of Remus' arm and looked away, unable to speak for the lump in his throat threatening to choke him. Harry swallowed heavily and looked back at Remus. "I was looking for Draco," he said finally.
"It's no use, Harry," Remus said with as much compassion as he could muster under the circumstances. "It's too late for him. You know that. Come on, we must go now if we're going to get out of here."
Harry sighed in resignation and nodded once. Remus turned away and walked back to an increasingly agitated Hermione, Harry trailing behind. His eyes swam with unshed tears, blurring his vision even more. He stopped again, took off his glasses and rubbed them away angrily with his now blackened fingers, telling himself it was because of the smoke and increasing heat from the fire that was raging above them and not the loss of fallen comrades or, more importantly, Draco.
Replacing his glasses, Harry blinked for several moments, waiting for things to come back into focus. He glanced over his shoulder once more and then back toward Remus' distant figure. With straightened shoulders and a determined set to his jaw, he followed as quickly as he could, the earlier indecision now gone.
A comforting familiar tingle of magic told Harry that they had safely arrived at the Apparition point. He could see relief soften the tense expressions of his two weary and fearful companions.
"You go first, Hermione," he said. Sensing time was of the essence Hermione gave a quick nod and took out her wand, drawing a pattern of Runes in the air that would allow her to step through the shield and Apparate to safety, to the other members of the Order at Grimmauld Place that hadn't been caught at this supposedly secret base. With a soft pop she was gone.
"Now you, Remus."
"I think you should go first, Harry, that way I'll know that you're safe."
Harry looked intently at him for a moment and frowned slightly before drawing his wand. He turned to the shield and raised it, then swung around pointing it at Remus' chest. He held out his other hand, palm upwards. "Your wand, if you please, Remus."
Remus' jaw dropped and his eyes widened in shock. "Harry? What do you think you're doing?"
"I'm going back. I need to see Draco," Harry replied, his voice perfectly calm, despite the situation they were in. "I'm not leaving until I've found him, and I'll use this on you," he nodded at his wand, "if I have to. Now, your wand, please."
Remus watched Harry warily as he reluctantly handed his wand over. "You’re a fool, Harry,” he said, shaking his head with resignation. “What are you going to achieve? It's. Too. Late."
"Remus, I'm not arguing with you. You are going to leave now, or I'll use Imperio on you."
There was a loud crash above their heads, startling both men. Remus used the temporary diversion to lunge at Harry, trying to disarm him. But Harry was quicker and neatly side-stepped away from him. Magic crackled around them as they circled each other warily until Remus found his back pressed up against the invisible shield of the Apparition point, Harry's wand pressed firmly against his heart. Harry’s features were twisted with fury, almost beyond recognition at this futile attempt to keep him from his goal.
"I haven't got the time or inclination for games, Remus,” he snarled. “I'm really sorry we have to part like this. Believe me." With that, Harry quickly drew the pattern of Runes and pushed Remus through the shield as it parted, throwing his wand after him.
With a flourish of his own wand he drew another set of Runes, effectively blocking Remus' attempted return. Harry took several steps back away from the shield, and held his hand up briefly, almost as if he was going to salute the distraught man before him, before he turned around and disappeared into the smoky haze.
