Summary: The Wizarding World is still recovering from the brutal and devastating war against Voldemort. Everyone agreed that it must never, ever happen again. But at what cost? A chance discovery will lead Auror Harry Potter down a dangerous path to find out.

“I’ve already told the other lot everything I know.”
“And now you’re going tell us, Jebediah.”
Jebediah looked away from the penetrating gaze of the dark-haired Auror sat directly across the table from him. “Why should I? Didn’t they believe me?” he sneered.
“Oh, it’s not that they didn’t believe you. It’s more to do with what they caught you trying to sell.”
“I wasn’t trying to sell anything. I’ve never seen those things before.” Jebediah protested, his eyes flicking briefly to the items in front of him. “I was just minding my own business, admiring the view.”
Harry snorted. “Really? The view must have been spectacular at 2am down a dark alley.” His partner, Doyle, a fresh-faced young man with shorter, light brown hair, sniggered beside him.
Jebediah shifted nervously in his seat, looking down at his hands, before replying, “They must’ve planted them then.”
“Who? The Hit Wizards?” Doyle asked incredulously.
Jebediah looked up and glared at him. “That’s right. Like I said, I’ve never seen them before today. I don’t even know what they are,” he retorted.
“Allow me to educate you then,” Doyle said. “In the jars we have Ramora scales. The magic of a Ramora fish is very potent and they’re protected from poachers by international wizarding law. But that’s not what we’re really interested in, we’re…” he glanced at Harry, who nodded imperceptibly, “we’re interested in this.” Doyle held up a phial of thick yellow liquid so it could be clearly seen.
“This is Pogrebin’s blood. A Pogrebin is a Dark Creature, which links this,” he said, tapping the phial with the forefinger of his other hand, “to the Dark Arts. And being involved in the Dark Arts, even in a minor capacity, is a one way ticket to…” he enunciated slowly for effect, “Az. Ka. Ban.” The colour drained from Jebediah’s face, along with the air of confidence he’d been clinging to. He swallowed heavily.
“We’ll try again, shall we?” Harry said, as he leant back in his chair and looked intently at Jebediah. He gestured to the collection of small jars and phials in front of him on the table. “How did you come by these?”
Jebediah glanced briefly at Harry. “I found them.”
“Where?”
Jebediah attempted a nonchalant shrug. “They just appeared.”
Harry and Doyle exchanged brief side-long glances. “You’ll have to forgive my skepticism,” Harry said as he picked up a small jar of silver scales off the table, twirling it with his fingers so that the harsh overhead lights appeared to change the silver into a myriad of iridescent hues, “but I’ve never heard of Apparating Ramora fish. Have you, Doyle?”
“No,” Doyle answered. He stared impassively at Jebediah who let out a long shaky breath, looking distinctly uneasy as he wiped his palms on his robe. “I need to take a piss,” he suddenly announced.
"I see." Harry replaced the jar and considered Jebediah for a moment. "Is that 'need to take a piss' in the call of nature sense, or 'need to take a piss' in the stalling for time while you use your pitiful imagination to fabricate the truth sense?" he queried.
Jebediah’s cheeks flushed in anger. “I... I can’t concentrate like this," he stammered. "You’re trying to trick me. That’s what you’re doing. Trying to get a false confession out of me.” He pointed a shaky finger at Harry. I… I’ll report you.”
Harry opened his mouth to speak but Doyle cut in. “I’ll take him and watch over him, Boss.”
Jebediah’s gaze snapped to Doyle. “Watch me! What are you, some sort of pervert?” he taunted. “You’ll be invading my privacy. You do understand privacy, don’t you?” The tightening of Doyle’s jaw was the only visible response, as he rose from his seat to escort Jebediah from the room.
“Consider it part of our hospitality package,” Harry remarked, before he released the Locking Spell on the door. Jebediah shot an evil glare over his shoulder towards Harry as he left the interview room.
Whist he waited for their return, Harry picked up one of the phials and shuddered. He knew Pogrebins were Dark Creatures from Russia that filled their human prey with such a sense of hopelessness that they gave up and collapsed, ready to be devoured.
“Well, well Jebediah, where on earth did a squib like you get an illegal substance like this from?” he murmured to himself as he carefully studied the viscous liquid inside. “Just who were you going to sell this to and what the hell were they going to do with it?”
