Ahead of Harry several stone steps appeared out of the shadows, revealed by the glow of the Lumos. A small smile of relief tugged at the corners of his mouth, he had finally reached the entrance that would take him back into the base. There appeared to be no smoke in this part of the passage so Harry removed the Bubble-Head Charm; he didn’t like the way it moved as he walked along, pressing against his head if he stumbled and enveloping his face like a shroud for the living.

Holding his wand in his teeth, Harry wiped his now sweating palms on his thighs. He grasped his wand in his right hand, took a deep breath and muttered the first part of the incantation that would open the concealed entrance. The silvery outline of a large rectangle, wall height but not quite as wide, briefly flared to life.

~*~

Tamping down on the pain that threatened to cloud his mind and his judgement once again, Draco slowly stood. Turning around he set to work quickly, sweeping his wand over the door while he cast a series of complex Locking Charms, followed by a new variation of the Confundus Charm designed for use in an enclosed space rather than on people to prevent his immediate discovery should someone gain entry.

Feeling less vulnerable, Draco crossed the lobby and opened the door to one of the small store rooms; it appeared to contain various sized jars and bottles of what looked like potions ingredients and medical supplies neatly stacked on shelves against the back wall. Stepping up to the shelves, Draco placed his left palm on to a slight depression between two large jars of burn-healing paste. The wood beneath his palm grew warmer until it began to glow the colour of embers without the heat.

A faint hum filled the room. Draco stepped back to allow the shelves to swing open, revealing a narrow section of wall. He pointed his wand at the top left corner of the hidden wall and was just about to run the Tracing Spell he and Harry had developed around the perimeter to see who had recently used this exit when he felt a distinct build up of magic emanating from the other side.

Someone was trying to come through.

Heart in his mouth, Draco quickly pushed the shelves back into position and left the store room. Back in the rear lobby he once again cast a Disillusionment Charm, not being sure of whom the impending visitor was or of the reception he’d receive, and stood with his feet planted slightly apart, eyes fixed firmly on the store room entrance.

His stomach tied itself in knots as adrenalin once again flowed through his body. Some people hated it, but Draco loved the sensation of anticipation that went with covert operations. Gripping his wand even more tightly, he pointed it at his target, the store room door, ready for a confrontation should the need arise.

~*~

When the silvery outline had faded, Harry pointed his wand at the centre of a large crescent-shaped design etched into the middle of the wall. He and Draco had taken the design from a Pictish symbol stone they had once seen in Scotland; Draco had thought it appropriate to their situation. Together they had woven much protective magic into the symbol as they created it.

Saying the final part of the opening incantation, Harry watched the lines within the symbol glow like molten gold then vanish just as the wall began to move, sliding soundlessly into a recess Harry knew was there, just to the left of him in the gloom. A sharp pang of regret caused his stomach to clench at the thought of the two of them, amongst others, designing and constructing the escape route for the base – not that he ever thought he would be using it.

The shelves before him swung open. Harry made his way to the door and looked through the spy hole, only visible from inside the small room. The lobby seemed to be clear. “Nox,” Harry whispered, extinguishing the Lumos. Holding his wand firmly, he opened the door and cautiously stepped out, scanning the area once again as he did so. Detecting nothing untoward he began to stride across the lobby with purpose, a look of grim determination on his face.

“You appear to be going the wrong way unless, of course, you’re on a suicide mission.”

Harry froze then whirled around, wand arm outstretched, his eyes frantically searching the empty space before him. Was his imagination playing tricks on him, or had he just heard Draco’s voice? Detecting a slight disturbance in the air before him, Harry raised his arm and pointed his wand toward it.

“Show yourself,” he demanded.

There was a murmured “Finite”, a faint shimmer, and then Draco stood before him, wand pointed directly at his heart.

Thank you! ♥

I couln't think of how to describe the feel of the charm. My husband actually walked in on me with the the voile curtain wrapped around my face while I was mulling various phrases over. He thinks I'm mad. I'm actually starting the last bit now.

Let me wait for part 5 and still the outcome is not revealed... Wah!!!
Don't let them hurt each other... but somehow I know you won't. Not physically, anyhow.

I love the way you choose your words. The athmosphere of the scene is so well described I've got the feeling I'm there...

It had taken me so long to get to this point, I was getting impatient with myself - when that happens I mes things up, so I decided to post what I was happy with. Forgive me?

I love the way you choose your words

You have no idea how much deletion and muttering goes on as I try to find what sounds right.

Thank you so much. :) I'm a visual person and I try to convey what I can see in my head. If I'd had more time I would've researched some latin phrases for those spells rather than being so vague.

Just what I needed after a long night at work! Thanks! However, missy... SIX chapters, hmm? Six? Excuse me? *snarls* Fine. Be that way. *g*

I can't wait to see the confrontation between the two! Brilliant job as usual. With a cliffhanger no doubt. *grr*

Wow. That sounds familiar. Wonder where I heard that line before? Hmmm. *giggles* I don't blame you a bit tho of posting what you have already done. I'm beginning to feel the same way about mine. Divide it into 3 or 4 chapters! Eep! And each with a cliffhanger. *g* Take a peek. It's under 'working on the railroad'.

I have always loved stories with a strong magical presence, and not only that, but the conscious physics, if you will, to go along with it. Your details about the bubble head charm hitting his face as he moves are wonderful and very original. And the charm on the door, the care he uses going through it... Very nice! I also liked the power of Draco's "entrance." A wonderful line for him to say.

Oooh, thanks for another lovely comment! I spent ages on the Lexicon reading essays on magical theory, to no avail. I think I was more confused, so I decided to use some of the artefacts I'd seen when I studied archaeology. Pictish symbol stones are lovely, although some of their meaning has been lost over the millennia. Inventing some of the stuff on hd-365 gave me the confidence to try my hand at more magical stuff.

Re your icon: who's the 6th guy - the one with the long blond hair?

Ah mah gaaawwwwd.

That's Iason Mink. O.o

If you like slashy anime, then you absolutely HAVE to get to know this guy. I refer to him as the Uber-Bish of all Bishounen. He may be found in an older anime two-parter called Ai no Kusabi, based off of a Japanese novel by the same title. It's an incredibly dense universe, the one in that story. Iason is the top of the highest class of humans (called, appropriately, Blondies) in a male-dominated society. There actually aren't very many female characters at all, but basically, it goes down like this: the blonds are the top dogs (genetically engineered super humans), the redheaded men make up the second class (mostly eunuchs who serve the Blondies), and at the bottom of the food chain are the brunets (in the role of slaves). Now, Riki is a brunet who catches Iason's favor -- and consequently, his heart. Intriguing story, great character development... You HAVE to watch it somehow.

Heh! Remember, I like Gravitation: both anime and manga, and Gerard et Jacques. It sounds right up my alley, so I'll put the word out.
